Traditionally we showed only the best of surviving steam power on and off the rails in Asia. Now we live in the UK we've added our local narrow gauge railway, some steam fairs and the Hill Railway on Penang, our second home.
Wringinanom Cane Fire, East Java, Indonesia
On 12th August 1997, I was out on the north line at Wringinanom with Ducroo and Brauns 0-8-0T 7, some way from from the point of departure. As the train left I could see smoke rising from some of the nearer loris which quickly spread back down the train. The fire had been started by cinders from the locomotive igniting the copious amounts of cane trash which should have been removed during cutting. It soon came to a halt and the crew were able to divide the train and extinguish part of the fire. Once the loose trash had burned off from the rear section, the two halves of the train were rejoined and the whole ensemble headed back home.
There would have been some damage to the cane, but as long as it was crushed reasonably soon after, no great loss of the sugar content.
Of course, this is something you can't plan for, in hindsight I would have got a better record if I had been standing much closer to where the train had been parked prior to departure but the video record would have normally been very ordinary.
I have uploaded quite a few clips in the last year or two and I fear that there is very little left in my archive worthy of uploading... There will now be a break before I upload more of Ross Sadler's Java material. In the last year and a half I have uploaded nearly 100 videos showing sugar steam in the late 20th century, it's a unique record of an era that has passed.

Mud trains at every sugar mill in Java were the preserve of the smaller locomotives. At Kanigoro this traditionally meant Vulcan 0-6-0T 5 and Borsig 0-6-0T 1. By 1981, mainline steam in Java was at a low ebb and would come to an end in the next few years. This clip shows a Krupp D52 2-8-2 leaving Kroja on a mixed train to the west, either to Banjar or Purwokerto.
